Conservation

"Felix's dedication to conservation, both on his farm and in the wider world, exemplifies the power of individual action in preserving our natural heritage" - Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton CBE, Founder of Save the Elephants

Felix Appelbe is a committed conservationist whose passion for protecting the natural world spans both land and sea. His approach to conservation is characterised by hands-on experience, innovative initiatives, and a deep-seated belief in the importance of environmental stewardship.

Origins

Felix's journey in conservation began early in life, rooted in a passion for farming and land management:
  • Developed a love for nature and farming from childhood, often rising at 5 am to explore fields and hedgerows
  • Pursued a BSc in Rural Estate Management, gaining formal education in land stewardship
  • At age 24 purchased Woodcock Farm; a small, run-down working farm in the high Cotswolds, with the long-term vision of building a viable working farm
  • In the early 1980s, managed a remote 10,000-acre farm near Dongara, Western Australia; despite challenges of marginal soil, limited resources, and pre-internet isolation, Felix cultivated wheat and lupins, reared sheep from knackers yards, and planted Radiata pines - which he found thriving upon returning years later, a testament to his enduring positive impact on the landscape

On Land

Felix's conservation efforts on land centred around Woodcock Farm and extend to various initiatives:
  • Transformed Woodcock Farm from a neglected small farm into a viable, productive unit
  • Planted hundreds of trees and approximately 2000 yards of hedges, significantly enhancing biodiversity
  • Pioneered "Rewilding Woodcock," an ongoing project to restore natural processes and wildlife habitats
  • Co-founded Save the Elephants with Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, contributing to global wildlife conservation
  • Twice recognised in prestigious national conservation awards for his positive impact on ecology and local community

In Water

Felix's conservation interests extend beyond land to include marine environments:
  • Collaborated with Dr. Cal Major to establish Seaful, promoting ocean literacy and connection to blue spaces

Felix’s believes in the power of individual action combined with collaborative efforts to preserve our natural world.
