Supporting Conservation: Felix Appelbe and Save the Elephants
In 1993, Dr Iain Douglas-Hamilton, CBE, a leading authority on African elephants, founded Save the Elephants (STE) following a suggestion from Felix Appelbe. The organisation focused specifically on elephant conservation through research and community engagement.
Save the Elephants conducts important research on elephant behaviour, intelligence, and movements. The organisation applies these insights to develop practical solutions for elephant conservation and coexistence with local communities. Their work includes:
• Using GPS technology to track elephant movements and inform conservation efforts
• Implementing practical solutions like beehive fences to reduce human-elephant conflict
• Engaging with local communities through education and outreach programs
• Supporting global conservation efforts through the Elephant Crisis Fund
Felix Appelbe continues to support the organisation's mission through his philanthropic efforts. He established an annual prize in Samburu to recognise individuals who have significantly contributed to protecting elephants from poaching, thus enabling scientific work to continue.
The Appelbe Award
The Appelbe Award is a $500 cash prize given annually to recognise outstanding passion, commitment, and accomplishment in Samburu's wildlife conservation efforts. Felix Appelbe created the award to honour those working on the ground to save elephants from slaughter by poaching.
In 2020, the award was presented to Francis Galgitele, Head Ranger of Nasuulu Conservancy in Northern Kenya. Francis's story exemplifies the impact of dedicated individuals in conservation:
• Since 2012, he has managed the Nasuulu Ranger Force, a unit comprising members from four different tribes.
• Francis has become skilled in negotiation and peacemaking, helping to bridge gaps between tribes.
• Despite facing threats from poachers and bandits, Francis remains committed to his work and to those serving under his leadership.
Through this award, Felix Appelbe highlights the crucial role of local conservationists in protecting elephants and their habitats. Recognising individuals like Francis Galgitele underscores the importance of community involvement in successful conservation efforts.
Save the Elephants, with the support of individuals like Felix Appelbe, continues to work towards securing a future for elephants through a combination of scientific research, practical solutions, and community engagement.
